The UP 4014 (Big Boy) was finally refurbished and came roaring from Cheyenne to Ogden double heading with his little sister the trustworthy UP 844. First it came into Rock Springs. It took its time doing so. We waited (and waited and waited), and finally caught a couple of photos and some video just outside of Rock Springs before it came into town. The video is cool because one of the people waiting to catch the train had a scanner with him and he had it tuned to a frequency so we could listen to the talk between the engineers on the two engines as they came by.
The next day, we had to get up before dawn to catch it coming into Green River. I talked to several people (mostly men – I guess most of the women were smart enough to stay home in bed) while awaiting the arrival.
The most interesting couple were two married men from Windsor, England. The talkative one told me that they had seen a lot of steam engines, but this was the first live steam they had seen, the rest were “stuffed and mounted”. Here is the pre-dawn arrival in Green River and more photos as we chased it on its’ way to Evanston, WY.
